  1. My favorite quote was -" I learned that when I made people laugh, they liked me. This is a lesson I'll never forget" . This really speaks to me when it comes to rapport with my students. If I am able to make them smile/ we can laugh together, the learning and respect usually comes easy!

This challenges me to build even more rapport with my students. Specifically working with them 1:1!

  2. "Everyone who got to where they are had to begin where the were."

This is a very simple quote, but very profound. I have struggled my whole life with feeling like I am not good enough. Not smart enough, not talented enough, and definitely not confident enough to take a step outside of my comfort zone. The fact of the matter is that everyone that got to big places in their life, started somewhere smaller. Some have more help or started on a taller step, but it still took many steps to get there. You only have what you have and you have to build the resources and strength to move ahead. I have worked hard to overcome the boundaries that set me back. Anytime I doubt myself, I think of the steps that I've taken to get to this point. I can use this mindset every day with my students. They are often quick to give up because of the same insecurities that I face, and I love to encourage students to reach for their goals because it feels so good to accomplish hard things.

"Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." - Mark Twain
This quote is so inspiring to me because so many people will constantly try to tear you down if you're doing better than them. My purpose in life is to teach kids and be a role model for them and I will never let that be taken away because of negativity. Nobody is going to stop me from being a great teacher for my students. It's a reminder to always choose to surround yourself with people that support you and will be there for you rather than always be around negative people.

  4. Trina Merideth's Response:
The quote I chose is by Woodrow Wilson "I not only use all the brains that I have, but all the brains I can borrow." These words challenge me to find new resources, staff members, administrators, and counselors and visit with them, ask questions of them, listen to their ideas to be a better teacher, engage students, reach out to struggling students, and challenge students.
These words will help me teach like a pirate because I am assembling and finding a crew to becoming a better teacher.

  5. "The great end of life is not knowledge but action." I chose this quote because, as a teacher, I often rely on my knowledge too much, when I should be taking action. I need to not give into my fear of taking chances and take action. In the end, what will matter is what actions I took, not what I know.

  6. “I not only use all the brains that I have, but all the brains that I can borrow.” -Woodrow Wilson (pg. 169)
These words remind me how powerful a professional learning network can be. I am so blessed to have many people in my building who bounce ideas around. Sometimes I search things out online (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, blogs, etc.), and sometimes I forget to go looking there. These words will help me to teach like a pirate because even though I'm sort of on an island, being the only teacher in my content (library), I'm blessed to be able to hash out ideas with other teachers in my building.

The quote that I take the most from is from Teddy Roosevelt,"It is not the critic that counts..." These words challenge me to press on and do it! Take a chance! You will get criticized by someone no matter what you do. You will never please everyone so TRY!

This will help me teach like a PIRATE because it allows me to show my Passion, build Rapport, And and Analyze for what I am doing and moving on into the future, Transform what I am already doing and show my Enthusiasm for what I am doing.

  8. “You can offer no finer gift or higher honor to the world than to find out what your “drum” is and then play it for all it’s worth.”
These words challenge at least me to be more true to my authentic self. To play the melody unique to me. I think the quote is a good fit with teaching like a pirate, because it challenges you to utilize your unique talents. I know that there are projects that others in my department don’t have the same drive to teach, because it doesn’t suit their melody. One of my favorite things is brainstorming and adjusting projects for students. I look the most forward to what my students will be creating. Its that desire to keep exploring and finding buried “treasure”.

  9. The quote that inspires me is from Woodrow Wilson, "I not only use all the brains that I have, but all the brains that I can borrow." These words challenge me, becuase I don't know everything or even know all the right answer. But there are some other resources I can use such as teachers, administrators, motivational speaker, and books to help me become a great teacher.
This will help me teach like a PIRATE. How I can feel more passionate for the subject I am teaching; to be immersed in the moment to engage my students; to build rapport with my student on a personal level; allow my students to connect with ideas and open to feedback; transform my classroom into a place students want to be there; show my enthusiasm of the subject matter. I don't have all the answer how to teach like a pirate, but I can reach out to others and their ideas.

  10. "Action is the foundational key to all success." - Pablo Picasso
This quote challenges me to put action to the thoughts, ideas, and systems that I have been pondering, researching or desiring to do. Instead of just continuing to learn more about them or acquire more knowledge, I need to starting "shipping" them ... putting action to it.
This quote will help me to teach like a pirate because it challenges me implement my ideas and not just think about how I could better my lesson or be a more effective teacher but to actually BE that person because I'm putting said things into action. Putting myself out their and not fear the failures but frame them and continue to move forward with action!!

  11. A quote that inspires me is "Do whatever you do intensely." These words challenge me to stop playing it safe. There are times I find myself thinking that there aren't ways to make my lessons better or more engaging but then I have to remind myself that there are ALWAYS ways to make lessons better! I don't want to just follow the curriculum or teach to a test. These words will help me Teach Like A Pirate because a pirate brings their lessons to life and goes all in. They are invested and recognize that you don't have to be perfect.

  12. A quote that inspires me from Dave Burgess is, “You don’t have to be able to see the top of the mountain to know that you can only get there by moving forward.” These words challenge me to not have to see a whole picture, but rather keep striving to make progress in some way. Students, and even myself, love to have immediate results. I mean who doesn’t? This can be hard at times when goals that students have can take time to achieve in special education. These words help me Teach Like a Pirate because a pirate doesn’t have to see the top of the mountain at that specific time as long as we keep taking steps in the right direction. If students are involved in creating their individual education goals, they are more likely wanting to work on them to achieve it by the next IEP meeting. This was something I loved doing and recognized how impactful including a student in their own education plan was.

  13. Before I even saw this question, I wrote down the quote from the book I plan to hang up by my door. The quote is from Jimmy Johnson: Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great.
I love that as it reminds me "a ship is safe in the harbour, but that is not what ships are for". We have so much more potentil than we utilize, in our brains and in our lives. I want my students to know it is okay to take a chance and fail at something. Trying isn't losing, its learning. And that knowledge learned propels you higher and farther than if you didn't try (and fail). It is a good lesson for all ages as it is never too late to "go for it" in life. Take a chance and you might fail, but you might acheive something amazing! Comfort is a trap. I like the sentiments in the book to try, be bold, do it scared, be okay with those who don't understand. Pirates don't play it safe and we all remember the pirates in our lives.

  14. "Do you want to be safe and good or do you want to take a chance and be great?" Jimmy Johnson

These words challenge me to take chances and to not get stuck in a rut. They challenge me to strive for greatness instead of being content with good.

These words will help me teach like a pirate by transforming from good to great. By asking this question from the quote, I can analyze where I can move from the safety of good to take a chance with greatness. I can teach with passion and remember to be a lifelong learner. I can be bold and take risks like a pirate!

  15. “If you haven’t failed in the classroom lately, you aren’t pushing the envelope far enough.” is a quote that stuck with me given the previous reading and discussion posts. As a social studies teacher and coach, these words challenge me to take more risks in my teaching and coaching, try creative strategies, and not be afraid of making mistakes. They remind me that growth and engagement come from experimentation, whether it’s designing a bold, interactive lesson on U.S. history or developing a new practice drill with my team. I can't be afraid to take risks and grow from experimenting with lessons, new ideas, and strategies. Applying this to my classroom and coaching will help me Teach Like a Pirate by creating experiences that are memorable, engaging, and meaningful, encouraging students and athletes alike to think critically, take risks, and stay excited about learning and improving.

  16. "Kill the inner critic that blocks your creative flow. Surrender your search for the holy grail of perfection. Create freely, liberally, and in great quantities; doing so relieves any one idea of the need to be perfect."

These words challenge me to let go of fear and self-doubt, take more risks, and try new ideas without worrying about them being perfect. They will help me Teach Like A Pirate by encouraging me to bring more creativity, energy, and innovation into my lessons, making learning more engaging and memorable for my students.

  17. One of my favorite quotes was, "Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure." by Thomas J. Watson.

Failure is a hard thing to be ok with, but is a necessary part of future success. No one likes to fail or to appear bad at something, but the more often we fail, the better we become. This is an area I need to grow in as well.

This can help me 'teach like a pirate' because I can relay this to my second graders, and hopefully plant that see young, that failure isn't bad, but can actually lead to greater success later.

"Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?"

We ask our students to step outside of their comfort zones almost daily, (work with new people, present in front of the class, ask a silly question that they should already know, etc.) but we often get so set in our ways of teaching that we never try new things.

I think this quote encourages me to step outside of my own comfort zone and try something new. If I can ask my students to do it, maybe I should take the first step and show them how its done.

  19. This section offered me so many distinctively personal quotes. Some that help me to recognize and appreciate my strengths; others that expose and offer understandings of my weaknesses, challenging me to actively pursue ways to transform them to strengths and providing inspiration to accomplishing this. To choose just one quote is difficult, but to that end, I have "decided" on this quote by Dave Burgess:
"We are skyrocketing forward into an educational landscape that is changing every day. In these exciting times, we must be ready to take on the challenge of redefining greatness for a whole new generation of teachers and students."
As a "very" veteran teacher, I feel a deep obligation to not only myself and my students, but also to my fellow teachers, experienced and just starting out, to be committed to playing my "drum" to the best of my ability (Loved that analogy!).
I would very much like my legacy to be that my love for teaching and the students entrusted to me; my ability to embrace change, take risks, and grow; and my commitment to supporting and sharing experiences with those who journey with me would serve as inspiration to those who come after me.

  20. “You can offer no finer gift or higher honor to the world than to find out what your “drum” is and then play it for all it’s worth.”
This quote resonates with me because everyone has a different style of teaching and I need to just be true to my own drum and be the best that I can be. Everyone is unique and special in their own way and I can be confident in how I bring out my inner pirate in my teaching.

One quote from these pages that inspires me is "Everyone who got to where they are had to begin where they were". These words challenge me because they remind me that we don't go from good to great in one step. Growth takes time, but in time when can get to greatness. Becoming a great educator is the same. It takes time to develop teaching technique and effective/engaging lessons. The quote inspires me to try new strategies to become great at my craft.

These words will help me Teach Like a Pirate by encouraging me to continue working to become a great teacher - a teacher that develops engaging lesson, utilizes hooks, and connects with students. The words remind me that becoming a great teacher is a journey of growth. By continuing to learn, try, and reflect, I can improve everyday.

  22. “Once you've done. The mental work comma there comes a point you have to throw yourself into the action and put your heart on the line.” – Phil Jackson
These words challenge me or give me the confidence that once I have done the preparation and feel confident, to go forward and try the new lesson or idea. I agree that fear of failure often stops us from implementing new ideas or fear of ridicule. If we have the children's best interest in mind, then we have to have the confidence to go forward and do what we can to make sure we get all or as much of the student buy in as possible. The enemy of great is good and as a teacher and administrator I cannot be satisfied with good knowing that there is possibility of great and our students need great or at least the pursuit of greatness. Pirates are daring and adventurous, and chasing greatness at the cost of good is daring and can be extremely adventurous.

  23. A quote from these pages that I like is "Teaching is a poker game that must be played "all in". Our students deserve teachers that are 100% committed to their profession. Passion, Integrity, and Commitment are needed to not only survive the daily grind of the teaching world but to also inspire the next generation to believe that they have the power to achieve great things when they work hard and commit to something.

This is also a quote that can remind me that I am "all in" for every student. Sometimes we have some tough students that come through our classroom doors. I need to be all in for all students no matter the need of the child. This profession is not one where you can coast through. Any student teacher that observes in my classroom, I always remind them that things won't be perfect, some days will be hard, but your passion, energy, and commitment to the students is something you will always be able to control.

This quote also reminds me that any lesson can always be get better. Teachers need to be learning from their students, their colleagues, and from personal growth. I know that everything I do can be reflected upon and for that, I will also be a lifetime learner.

How will these words help you Teach Like A Pirate?
First of all, the book is filled with so many great and inspiring quotes, but the quote from Thomas J. Watson inspired me because it's a quote I would like to present to my students. I feel that even at the age of 9, students equate success with perfection. Students don't want to verbalize a thought because it may be "wrong." They think they are "stupid" if they don't get 100% on all their work. This quote, "Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure." Learning to persevere in failure will lead to success. However, the failure to persevere in challenging situations will result in a defeated spirit.
I often tell my students that the classroom is a place for mistakes. We learn from them and teach others from them. If we knew all the answers, there would be no challenge or motivation to learn.
I want to teach like a pirate by challenging my students to learn and grow each day, to take chances, to be brave enough to fail, and to inspire themselves and others to strive for more every day.

  25. George Bernard Shaw "This is the true joy of life: the being used for purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one: the thoroughly being worn out before you are thrown to the scrap heap: the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."

Here we are to make ourselves happy and do the work that we enjoy selflessly. We want/need our students to be successful in the classroom, but more importantly, in life. Our student are our future as entrepreneurs, artists, leaders, and possibly teachers.

What do these words challenge you to do? These words challenge me to do two things-one, continue to celebrate the things I do everyday in my classroom and two, continue to be open when learning about new ideas to bring into my classroom. As teachers, we need to understand that we are surrounded by people and resources filled with ideas to make learning more meaningful.

How will these words help you Teach Like A Pirate? These words help me understand that as a teacher, I need to be growing and changing all the time. It’s my job to help those around me enjoy learning as much as I do. Not every lesson will be a production, but if you can create a memorable moment at least once a week, your students will remember you, your lessons, and your love for them and learning.
