I absolutely loved this course. I believe it really makes you think about the way you teach and how you can always be better than just good. Dave has so many inspiring things to say in his book that I believe all teachers should give it a read and teach like a pirate!

I absolutely liked this course. The book and videos support each other and well as "pull" on different learning styles. It makes sense and provides SO many different ideas for engagement - this is really helpful and powerful.
I would definitely recommend this book study to a colleague, in particular, a new teacher because of all of the "hook" ideas. I would have loved to have had these ideas as a new teacher.

  5. I really enjoyed this book and I liked the way that the author wrote. It was easy to understand and also enjoyable. His ideas made sense and he gave feasible ways of achieving the ideas. I would definitely recommend this book to my fellow teachers and I know they would get a lot out of it.

  6. This has been a good course for me. I've heard of this book plenty of times, but I hadn't make the commitment to read & implement it until this class. There were so many good insights and I really want to explore all the hook options! I'm glad they were listed with so many possible guiding questions.

  7. I liked this course. The book was concise and meaningful. I love the questions section the best! If I were to make the course better I would find a new video of Dave Burgess giving his presentation due to the volume issues. I would recommend this course to a friend.

  8. It was set up well, and flowed well. It was a decent read, and I liked the books setup. I would recommend it to a colleague.

  9. This is my first book study and I really enjoyed reading the book. Dave Burgess broke the book down very well and gave good examples. I also liked the quotes he used throughout the book to get his point across on each topic. I liked that he told the reader that if don't start using the knowledge you won't become a greater teacher and also not to be afraid to fail. The only thing I disagree with him is those 6 words, "Its easy for you. You're creative." Yes everyone creative, but for some of us it is harder to pull that creative side out of us.
If one of my colleague is planning on a book study I would recommend it to them.

  10. At first this book was hard for me to get into. It was hard because it seemed like in the first part of the book Dave Burgess was really tooting his own horn. However, I did end up really getting into the book and LOVED how he inspired and challenged me to be a more effective teacher, to question myself on how I could make this lesson even better and I really appreciated that!
I also appreciated that he gave so many categories to evaluate our lessons with and questions for each category that we could ask ourselves to see how we could tweak or improve the lesson, foster more student engagement, and inspire a love for learning.
I would recommend this book to a colleague. I found it helpful.

  11. I have previously read this book in a Social Studies college course and really enjoyed it the first time. After reading it a second time, I truly took so much more from it. I really enjoyed reading all of Burgess' suggestions on hooks because in my ELA class, we cover a wide variety of topics in our units and I can use most of them over the course of the year. I would recommend this book and book study to colleagues so that they can also Teach Like A Pirate.

  12. I really enjoyed this book study course and how I was able to complete this course on my own time. This is my first book study and I plan to complete two more to obtain my graduate credits for the renewal of my teaching certificate. I previously read this book in college, but feel I took away a lot more re-reading this book a second time. There are lots of hooks that can be applied in a classroom or other careers as well. Engaging your audience and being intentional with what one is educating is impactful. I would highly recommend this book study to a colleague!

  13. I would recommend this book and especially seeing Dave present in real life. He is as engaging as his book. It was good for me to re-read the book for this course as I had it a while ago. It has revived me into creating more engaging lessons, to create interesting hooks, and to make presentations equal to content. I am always trying to be better and this inspired me. I thought the TEDtalks were very good additiiona and chosen well to compliment the book content.

  14. I liked this course and would recommend it to a colleague. I love reading books, so I enjoy any book study. I also like how I can go at my own pace in these courses. I thought the start of Part I was a little slow and that the author was so much more engaging in the video than in the first part of the book. Then I got to Part II, which had so many examples of hooks. The hooks were my favorite part. I have used a couple hooks in class and also find myself implementing other ideas from the book into my classroom. These ideas have helped bring more passion and remember excitement into my classroom. This book has helped me to stop being content with "good" and to instead strive for "great". It's helped me rekindle my passion for teaching and trying new ideas in my classroom.

  15. I loved the book and the material because i feel like it fit great with my subject of social students and had many strategies and tools that I can actually use in my social studies classroom and coaching. I also appreciated how it encourages teachers to take risks, be passionate, and connect with students on a deeper level. There wasnt much about this book or course that I did not like. It was well organized, structured, and detailed. And I would recommend this book study to a colleague because it’s motivating and full of actionable strategies. Even if someone has been teaching for years, it can renew your energy, push you to take risks, and help you think about engagement in new ways.

This book is very entertaining and does a great job of providing real examples of how to implement some of these ideas in the class (teaching the same subject helps). I thought it was a breath of fresh air that wasn't just about the same stuff we learn in college. It makes teaching seem like a show, which allowed me to look at my job from a different perspective.

  18. I so loved this book study! The book was so well written and laid out in such an easy fashion. What an inspiration Dave Burgess is! He is such an outstanding educator and world famous, yet there was no pretension, just a 'real' desire to support and encourage fellow educators. It was almost like having a fun and inspiring conversation with the teacher next door!
The book study itself was wonderful and paced well. I loved the mixture of book readings and videos, and the questions for the blog posts helped me to reflect on the information presented and how I can apply it into my teaching.
Sincerely, thank you for this outstanding book study! I learned so much and am so excited to put it into practice!

There were many things that I liked abut this course. I really liked the fact that it provided me many techniques to apply to my instruction and lessons, especially those that will help me become a great teacher. I also liked that I could move through this course at my own pace. I also valued the TED talks. I thought they supplemented the textbook reading very well. I can't think of anything that I didn't like about this course. In fact, based on my experience with this course I plan to take another. I would definitely recommend this book study to a colleague. It was a great course. Thank you!

  21. Great book study, my second favorite behind Hamish Brewer's Relentless. It was engaging and thought provoking and gives me different perspectives on teaching like a pirate as both a teacher and administrator. As in the past, I recommend this book and have enjoyed the book study progress.

  22. This is my 3rd book study and I absolutely love them! I especially needed this one while my students have been state testing this past week. This book definitely recharged me to end this year strong and to bring the energy as the students are feeling a little test fatigue right now. I would recommend this book to anyone that needs a reminder of how important we our to our students growth and love of learning.

This is my 2nd book study, and I took this course on the recommendation of two colleagues. This book has inspired me to challenge myself as a teacher. Are my lessons engaging? Do my students think of me as a "great teacher?" As teachers, we have a great opportunity to influence our students in positive ways. "Teach Like a Pirate" is filled with great quotes of encouragement for teachers and students. I would highly recommend this book to my colleagues.

  24. I really liked the book, so much so that I will lead a book study at my school next year. I think my teachers need a subtle reminder of what great can look like in our classrooms and our school.
